Conservative measures
Instructions are given regarding the importance
of a healthy lifestyle.
Regular excercise - walking and various sport activities, will greatly improve
the circulation and reduce the development and progression of varicose veins.
A healthy diet will help control body weight to normal levels. It will also help
blood flow, which in return will reduce the size of the varicose veins.
Surgery might not be necessary
Surgical treatment such as, ligation (tying of a vein) and stripping (removing a vein)
were the commonly recognized treatments for varicose veins in the past. Today however,
surgery is necessary in a low percentage of patients and is usually used on larger
varicose veins. Varicose vein surgery is done in the Hospital under general
anesthesia and it consists of stripping of the vein.
The patient is sent home to recover on the same day.
